What Business Owners Can Do to Keep the Workplace Safe from Fire

Business owners have an abundance of things on their plate, things that they’re responsible for, all of which have incredible importance to the success of the business. One majorly critical item for a business owner to manage is the safety of the business site as well as the employees and customers. Fire protection and prevention would definitely fall under this category. As a business owner, there are several things you can do – things that are easy to implement immediately – which exponential results in fire safety.

Thanks to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), we are supplied with some tips that can help with fire protection at the workplace.  By implementing a few smart strategies, you can increase the safety levels from fires at your business.

Below are some strategic tips you can implement:

  1. Let all employees know that one of the best ways to be safe from fire is to have a neat and organized workspace. Should a fire occur, a working area that is clean and tidy will reduce how fast a fire will spread and can help keep it contained. It also makes evacuation a lot faster because the exit paths are clear and streamlined.
  2. It’s important that checks for equipment and machinery are done on a regular basis. Staying on top of maintenance can prevent a fire due to a malfunctioning mechanism or wire.
  3. In addition, electric panels and boxes should be checked regularly as well. Performing routine maintenance on them as well can prevent a fire that results from a deficient electric panel or broken outlet.
  4. Because many chemicals are flammable, care should be taken that they are properly used and stored, according to the information on the labels and accompanying documents. This would include not just storage but disposal and ventilation as well.
  5. If smoking is permitted on the premises, there should be an outside designated area where that can take place. Smoking should never be allowed indoors or in random areas, and proper containers for cigarette disposal should be located in those areas as well.
  6. Employees should be informed of the locations of all fire extinguishers are as well as fire escape routes and emergency exits. Employers should also make sure there is adequate signage in these locations.

While these are just a few basic steps for fire safety, they are easy enough for any employer to implement simply and quickly. And just by adding a few safety measures, the risk of a dangerous fire can be reduced dramatically. Not only will your property and valuable assets be protected, but more importantly, lives can be saved too.
