The flameproofing process consists of spraying or soaking relevant items in fire retardant chemicals so they do not support combustion in the event of a fire. Such decorative items that fall under these mandates are decorative greens (Christmas and otherwise), drapes, rugs, curtains, fabric room dividers, etc.
The FDNY allows for certain exemptions when items have a specific function or are located in certain places. For examples, decorative items that are in private offices inside a commercial building do not have to be flameproofed. Art exhibits displaying works of art do not have to undergo flameproofing either. Specific physical locations also have different regulations for flameproofing. Examples of these places would be apartment buildings shelters, schools, museums, offices, and houses of worship.
